In his book The Speed of Trust, Stephen M. R. Covey asserts that trust “is the one thing that changes everything.” While there are a variety of activities that explore issues related to trust, the following is one of our favorites for demonstrating the beginning stages of trust formation.

The Trust Drive is a two-person driving scenario where one person takes the role of a non-sighted driver and the other person takes the role as the sighted GPS navigation system, providing information to the driver. The best location for this activity would be a flat, open space with no obstacles or fixed objects.

Begin by inviting each member of your audience to find a partner of similar height. Next, ask one person in each pair to take the role of the driver, standing in front, and the second person to take the role of the backseat driver, or GPS navigation system. The driver places his or her hands on an imaginary steering wheel (in the ten o’clock and two o’clock positions) and closes his or her eyes. This hands-up position creates an additional zone of safety in front of the driver. The backseat driver has the duty of keeping the blind driver informed about their surroundings, other drivers in the vicinity, and imaginary traffic signs (including speed limits).

After a minute or two, ask all drivers to stop, open their eyes, and provide some feedback to their sighted partners on two critical issues. First, what did their partner do that was good? And second, what could they do to improve and be even better?

After a brief feedback session, invite partners to switch roles and repeat the activity.

Consider using the following script for this activity.
